How to Safely Remove Your Home Tiles

tile in someone's home

Do-it-yourself methods for home remodeling, reconstruction, and restoration should not be difficult. These methods are meant to be flexible in any situation and inexpensive. That is why the do-it-yourself-method has been a popular alternative to most homeowners.

Removing the tiles on your floors or walls should be treated with the same simplicity as with any other home project. If you are unfamiliar with the tile removal process, here is a step-by-step process which you should follow for a safe and successful do-it-yourself tile removal job. Call us if you would prefer for us to take care of it for you!

Before the Procedure

Preparing yourself and the working area should always be your number one priority when it comes to performing any home project.

To prepare yourself, you must wear heavy-duty safety goggles and, preferably, leather gloves when performing this task. These protective items are your first line of defense against any stray shards of ceramic pieces that can possibly head your way.

As for the working station, you must remove all movable furniture and appliances from the room to avoid inflicting unnecessary damages.

Essential Tools

It is impossible to remove your tiles with your bare hands. To make the job simpler and faster, here is the list of tools you will need to complete the task:

  • Hammer
  • Chisel
  • Shingle Scraper
  • Tile Scrapper
  • Putty Knife
  • Pliers
  • Broom and Dustpan

Step-by-Step Procedure

Step one: To begin the removal of your tiles, you must strike each tile by hitting its center with a hammer. Be careful when doing this because the edges of the broken tiles are sharp. You also have to be certain that you are hammering the tile correctly in order to avoid pieces of tiles flying across the room.

Step two: Hold the chisel into the grout line that is found at the edge of the tile. Use the hammer to hit the top of the chisel and begin to chip out the tile. Repeat steps one and two until you have removed several tiles. If the tile is stubborn or too difficult to remove, use the shingle scraper. To use this tool, slide the shingle scraper under the tile and with a jabbing motion, lift up the tile from the floor’s surface.

Step three: Remove the remaining tiles with the tile scraper. You may notice that the adhesive of the floor is pliable; making it easy to remove.

Step four: Using a putty knife, chip off the setting material of the wall or floor until the surface is fairly even. It is okay if you were not able to remove all the adhesives on the wall or floor because all you want is to ensure that the new tile has a comfortable fit when installed.

Step five: Remove the spacer lugs by using the pliers. Spacer lugs are metal objects that can be left behind during the removal process.

The Use of Broom and Dustpan: Removing your tiles is a laborious and dirty job. From time to time, dust will be produced within any of these steps. Therefore, sweeping the area once in a while will keep the working area clean and safe.
